Drivers are facing long delays on the M25 this evening as heavy rain hits Essex.

Delays are building on the motorway in both directions between junction 26 near Waltham Abbey and junction 28 in Romford, east London.

This is due to surface water from heavy rainfall, according to National Highways.

Motorists are being urged to allow extra time and "have a safe journey".

A yellow thunderstorm weather warning for the whole of Essex has been issued by the Met Office today, which is in place until midnight.

Power cuts, road closures, and public transport delays should also be expected, forecasters warned.

It also added that homes and businesses “could be flooded quickly” as floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, and strong winds batter the county.
