Delays on trains this morning after 'faults with the signalling system'

All lines have reopened after major disruption this morning at Bolton train station.

Trains between Bolton and Preston were being cancelled following damage to overhead electric wires.

And other trains heading into Manchester are delayed due to a fault in the signalling system.

Despite the lines being reopened people are being warned of delays – a sign in Bolton train station shows all the upcoming trains and has warnings stating, ‘service delayed due to a fault with the signalling system’ and 'service delayed due to overhead wires being damaged'.

Services between Bolton and Preston were being disrupted earlier this morning due to a tree on the overhead line equipment in the Chorley area, the Northern website says.

A spokesperson for Northern said: “Network Rail advise they have now resolved the problem and train services can resume.

“Due to the nature of the earlier disruption, train crew and trains are now out of position and delays and service alterations will continue on our services between Manchester Airport and Blackpool North, in both directions.”

Customers on station platforms are being advised to listen for announcements or consult Customer Information Screens for up-to-date train running information.
