Demi Lovato made a triumphant comeback at the 2020 Grammy Awards on Sunday night when she performed her new song Anyone.

The song was written just days before she was rushed to hospital following a suspected overdose in July 2018 and her Grammys comeback marked her first performance since then.

Described by the popstar as her "cry for help", Anyone's lyrics include lines such as "I tried to talk to my piano / I tried to talk to my guitar / Talked to my imagination / Confided into alcohol."

Her tear-jerking performance earned her a standing ovation from the crowd, as Lovato failed to hold back the tears at the beginning of her performance, which caused her to start the song again.

Here's what the lyrics to Anyone mean.

Lovato opened up about her overdose and her time in hospital during an interview with Zane Low ahead of the Grammys on Sunday night.

She told the presenter on New Music Daily: "“I almost listen back and hear these lyrics as a cry for help.

"And you kind of listen back to it and you think, 'How did nobody listen to this song and think, let's help this girl?'".

It was the first time the 27-year-old spoke at length about the 2018 episode, and revealed more about her state of mind during that period in her life.

"“I was recording it in a state of mind where I felt I was okay, but clearly I wasn’t,” she said. "I even listen back to it and I’m like, ‘Gosh, I wish I could go back in time and help that version of myself.'"

And added: "I just remember hearing back the songs I had just recorded and thinking 'If there’s ever a moment where I get to come back from this, I want to sing this song.’”

She then spoke about how she now looks to the future during hard times to put a positive spin on her mind set.

"When I go through something difficult, I always stop and I think, "Okay, why is God putting me through this?'", she added. "And sometimes it doesn't make sense in that moment but like the song, I recorded it, went through everything, and then it made sense later."

What are the lyrics to Anyone?

Verse

I tried to talk to my piano

I tried to talk to my guitar

Talked to my imagination

Confided in to alcohol

I tried and tried and tried some more

Told secrets 'til my voice was sore

Tired of empty conversation

'Cause no one hears me anymore

Pre-chorus

A hundred million stories

And a hundred million songs

I feel stupid when I sing

Nobody's listening to me

Nobody's listening

I talked to shooting stars

But they always get it wrong

I feel stupid when I pray

So, why am I praying anyway?

If nobody's listening

Chorus

Anyone, please send me anyone

Lord, is there anyone?

I need someone

Anyone, please send me anyone

Lord, is there anyone?

I need someone

Verse

I used to crave the world's attention

I think I cried too many times

I just need some more affection

Anything to get me by

Pre-chorus

A hundred million stories

And a hundred million songs

I feel stupid when I sing

Nobody's listening to me

Nobody's listening

I talked to shooting stars

But they always get it wrong

I feel stupid when I pray

Why the f*** am I praying anyway?

If nobody's listening

Chorus

Anyone, please send me anyone

Lord, is there anyone?

I need someone

Anyone, please send me anyone

Oh, Lord, is there anyone?

I need someone

Oh, anyone, I need someone

Oh, anyone, I need someone

Outro

A hundred million stories

And a hundred million songs

I feel stupid when I sing

Nobody's listening to me

Nobody's listening

Where can I listen to Demi Lovato Anyone?
