A dentist has issued a warning against ignoring subtle white, brown or black spots on your teeth to prevent tooth loss and costly dental procedures. Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon at Dentum, stressed the importance of quickly addressing any changes in tooth colour, warning that ignoring such signs could have serious consequences.

"Small white, brown, or black spots on the teeth should not be dismissed lightly, as they could be early indicators of decay," Dr Bozic said. "These discolourations are often the result of bacterial plaque buildup, which can erode the enamel and lead to cavities if left untreated."

Dr Bozic warned that if decay is left unchecked, it can rapidly worsen, possibly requiring more invasive and pricey treatments.

He said: "If decay reaches the inner layers of the tooth, it can lead to infection and inflammation of the dental pulp, requiring root canal therapy to save the tooth. In severe cases, untreated decay can lead to tooth loss, which may require expensive restorative procedures such as dental implants or bridges, which can set you back hundreds if not thousands of pounds."

To prevent further decay and preserve oral health, Dr Bozic tells his patients to adopt proactive measures.

"Maintaining rigorous oral hygiene practices is crucial," he advised. "Brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and flossing daily can help remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth, reducing the risk of decay."

In addition to regular brushing and flossing, Dr Bozic recommended limiting the consumption of sugary and acidic foods and beverages.

He said: "These substances can contribute to enamel erosion and increase the risk of decay. Choosing healthier snack options and drinking water instead of sugary beverages can help protect tooth enamel."

Regular dental check-ups are crucial for detecting and addressing issues early on. "Visiting the dentist regularly allows us to identify decay and other dental issues in a timely manner," Dr Bozic explained. "Your dentist can perform thorough examinations, including dental X-rays, to detect decay in its early stages and provide appropriate interventions to prevent further damage."

Dr Bozic concludes with a sobering reminder of the potential consequences of ignoring visible tooth discolouration.

"Failing to address these subtle warning signs can lead to significant oral health problems and financial burdens," he cautioned. "Taking proactive steps to address discolouration can safeguard both your smile and your wallet in the long run."
