Des Buckingham thrilled by U’s grit and defensive solidity in play-off semi-final

DES Buckingham was thrilled with the defensive solidity Oxford United showed as they sealed a place in the Sky Bet League One play-off final.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg of the semi-final, the U’s were pegged back on aggregate when Peterborough United defender Josh Knight stabbed home four minutes before half-time.

Buckingham’s side responded quickly though, and Cameron Brannagan converted from the penalty spot in first half stoppage time.

The second period saw United deal with increasing Posh pressure, and needed some incredible moments at the back to see out the tie.

Sam Long produced an exceptional goal line clearance late on, while Jamie Cumming brilliantly saved from Knight deep into stoppage time.

U’s head coach Buckingham said: “I’ve got a watch that tells me my heart rate is too high for someone that’s stationary.

“You need moments like that at times like these, and I’m glad we got them with Sam’s clearance and Jamie’s save.

“They threw six players in the box with the crosses they were aiming for, and were a real threat.

“If they’re not playing through you, they’re playing around you. They’re such a dangerous side, so to be able to stand up to that throughout the game and come away from here with the result we needed, I’m delighted.”

He added: “I think we rode our luck at times as well, but you need a bit of that. The work rate and desire to defend, whether it’s Mark Harris from the front like we normally see in a press, or it’s the back four and Jamie making blocks, saves and tackles, it’s so important.

“Everyone focuses on what we do with the ball, and what that looks like, but the other side of the game is so important.”
