Desperate south Essex mum fears five-year-old 'won’t wake up' due to enlarged tonsils

A DESPERATE mother has spoken of her fear that her son “won’t wake up in the morning” as his enlarged tonsils prevent him breathing at night.

Sophie Jones, 34, has launched a fundraiser for private surgery to have her five-year-old son Isaac’s tonsils removed after a “terrifying” episode where he was left unable to breathe.

The mum insisted she has had great support from the NHS, but fears it could take months for a referral for Isaac’s tonsils to be removed.

Sophie is worried it could take years for surgery on the NHS because he has not suffered enough bouts of tonsillitis to receive an urgent referral.

Now, Sophie is hoping to raise £4,200 so Isaac can have his tonsils removed as a matter of urgency.

During the most severe incident, Sophie rushed Isaac to hospital when he woke in the middle of the night barely able to breathe.

She said: “Last week I thought I could lose him; it is so scary and for three nights I had him running into my room in the middle of the night because he couldn’t breathe.

“He was sobbing, and he was so scared, this is why we are looking at better routes to get this sorted, we want more for him.

“I am not a dramatic person but last week I really thought I could lose him.

“He is a healthy five-year-old, he shouldn’t have to go to bed worrying that he will not be able to breathe.

“I just don’t want that fear for him, and I have to comfort him and tell him that he will be okay.”

Mrs Jones added that any kind of cold or hay fever sets off the issues, as he has “no resilience” to the infections and is forced to rely on steroid pumps, which have helped the situation.

“I am at a point now where I don’t know how long this will take, it could be two years until we can get a removal and I am desperate now,” she said.
