Detention center staff members receive awards

Jailer Art Maglinger presented awards to Daviess County Detention Center employees this week in recognition of National Correctional Officers Week.

The 2023 awards recognize outstanding work performance or other achievements/contributions.

“I think serving behind the walls, the deputy jailers are our inside heroes of the law enforcement community,” Maglinger said. “We try to set a standard of performance, and you do that by rewarding the ones who are setting the example. It’s important also that the public remembers the service they are doing to protect the community.

“I think it’s really important to give credit where credit is due.”

Chuck Mattingly received Deputy of the Year, as selected by command staff. He was honored for consistently displaying initiative, teamwork and a strong work ethic.

Supervisors describe him as a being consistent, reliable and respected by inmates.

Command staff named Deputy Kalen Cobb as Control Room Operator of the Year for his “attention to detail” and “helping other deputies become better.”

Sergeant Keith Stiff, also selected by command staff, was named Supervisor of the Year. He was noted for “dedication and efforts to make the Daviess County Detention Center better” and his “willingness to listen/help.”

Maglinger presented his Jailer’s Award to Captain Joseph Moore, Lt. Shawn Longest, Sgt. Joni Bocianoski and deputies Lane Dickens and Debra Morton for a “high degree of dedication and professionalism.”

Deputies Cody Hall and Skylar Lee received the Life Saving Medal, which is awarded for the act of saving/prolonging human life through prompt and alert action.

The Honorable Service Award/Command Citation was was given to Captain Shannon Coomes and deputies Lacy Denson, Kurtis Galloway, Rick Hubbard and Billy Johnson. The award is presented for a credible act in the line of duty and for showing initiative, innovation and accomplishment.

Deputies Matthew Ali, Amber Hay, Austin “Ryan” Mattingly and Zackery Southwick received the U.S. Military Service/Campaign Awards for honorably serving in a branch of the U.S. armed forces.

The Educational Achievement Award, presented for acquiring 65 or more college credits or an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree, went to deputies Veronica Murray, Amber West and Southwick.
