Devon bakery bags worldwide pastry award

La Liste has announced the winners of its 2024 Pastry Awards, and one Devon Bakery has bagged a special award. The awards gave recognition to more than 3,000 pastry shops worldwide that it considers to be the "crème de la crème". Almost 200 of those were in the UK.

Speaking about the competition, Time Out explained: "La Liste is a gastronomic guide that prides itself on recommending the finest hotels and eateries across the globe. Now, it has weighed in on the world of pastry. "

The Almond Thief in Totnes has been named among the large list of UK winners. The eatery is known for making freshly baked sourdough bread, delicious pastries and coffee.

The Almond Thief bakery was started by Daniel Mifsud in Dartington in 2014 with the idea of baking exceptional goods from carefully sourced, sustainable and responsibly produced ingredients. Speaking to Plymouth Live, a spokesperson for the Almond Thief said: “This considered approach to understanding where our food comes from soon led to the realisation that a reliance on grain produced far overseas - as is the case with most commodities, and even organic flour - did not add up to a sustainable future.

"As a response, in 2019 we were fortunate enough to acquire a New American Stone Mill through a collaboration with two local farms, the Apricot Centre and Old Parsonage Farm, allowing us the opportunity to freshly mill our own flour from locally grown heritage and population wheat.

"That is wheat that is better able to cope with climatic variability, pest and disease pressures, as well as being packed full of flavour and nutrients. Working in this way has proven an important step in providing and supporting truly sustainable food systems - at a time when it is needed more than ever.”

The Almond Thief is open between Tuesday and Saturday, 9 AM and 2 PM and can be located at Rotherfold Square, Totnes, TQ9 5SN- opposite the Bull Inn.
