Devon courts: Dangerous dog case and assaults on police

A racially aggravated assault and a dangerous dog order are among the latest cases heard at magistrates' courts in Devon. Assaults on police officers and driving offences also feature in the round-up.

All criminal cases start at the magistrates. The most serious are sent to crown court. The majority of defendants are dealt with by fines or court orders but magistrates have the power to send people to prison for up to 12 months.

MAY 8

Owen Drew, Greenhill Lane, Newton Abbot. Age: 29. On 27/06/2022 at Whipton Village Road, Exeter, racially aggravated assault on a male, assaulted an emergency worker, theft from a shop and criminal damage. Plea: Guilty. Conditional discharge for 12 months. Compensation £550.

MAY 9

Keith Adams, Henson Park, Chard. Age: 46. On 27/02/2024 at Turks Head Lane, Honiton, shoplifting at the garage. Also shoplifting at M&S. Plea: Guilty. Eight weeks in prison. Compensation £211.

James Northcott Brewer, Clifton Street, Exeter. Age: 21. On 04/05/2024 at Exeter damaged a door to the European Shop on Sidwell Street. Plus two assaults by beating. Plea: Guilty. 16 weeks in prison. Compensation £250.

Jullian Lawrence, Bow, Crediton. Age: 53. On 06/12/2023 at Exeter drove when drug above the limit. Plea: Guilty. Disqualified for 12 months. Fined £200.

Elisha Durant, Cutteridge Lane, Whitestone. Age: 25. On 09/12/2023 at Exeter drove when drug above the limit. Plea: Guilty. Disqualified for 12 months. Fined £300.

William Little, Pethybridge, Lustleigh. Age: 35. On 10/10/2023 at Kingskerswell drove when drug above limit, no insurance and disqualified. Plea: Guilty. 10 weeks suspended for 12 months. Disqualified for 48 months.

Kelly Marie Stott, Abbotsbury Road, Newton Abbot. Age: 47. On 10/10/2022 at Newton Abbot had in a public place an article which had a blade or was sharply pointed, namely a razor blade. Drunk and disorderly and possession of cannabis. Plea: Guilty. Committed to prison for 15 weeks suspended for 12 months. Abstain from consuming any alcohol throughout a period of 60 days. Fined £120.

Heidi Johanna Clover, Trevanna Road, Kingsbridge. Age: 52. Owner of a dog which is dangerous and not kept under proper control. Plea: Consents. Order that the dog called Rocky be kept under proper control at all times.

MAY 10

Alistair Giddy, Cairn Road, Ilfracombe. Age: 32. On 21/03/2024 at Mill Street Bideford assaulted an emergency worker by beating and obstructed an officer. Plea: Guilty. Community order for three months. Abstain from alcohol for 90 days. Fined £40.

Lorna Lord, Buckland Brewer, Bideford. Age: 72. On 20/04/2024 at Buckland Brewer drink driving. Plea: Guilty. Disqualified for 14 months. Fined £161.

Jane Child, Pyworthy, Holsworthy. Age: 33. On 08/10/2023 at Holsworthy, failed to provide a specimen. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 12 months. Rehabilitation activity for 15 days. Disqualified for 36 months.

Amelia Eastman, Crosslands, Sticklepath. Age: 31. Between 06/10/2022 and 27/06/2023 at Barnstaple breached a restraining order. Plea: Guilty. Fine £80.

MAY 13

Edward Green, Road from Gilbrook Cottages, Exeter. Age: 36. On 10/03/2024 at Exeter Road, Exmouth drink driving. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 12 months. Unpaid work for 120 hours. Disqualified for 29 months.

Giulio Reay, Arena Park, Exeter. On 21/03/2024 at Axminster assaulted a female by beating. Breach of a restraining order. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 12 months. Alcohol treatment for six months. Unpaid work 120 hours.

Sudesh Roopasinghe, Buller Close, Cullompton. Age: 31. On 20/08/2023 ast Cullompton assaulted a female by beating. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 12 months. Rehabilitation activity for 15 days. Fine £460.

Christopher Hoyle, South Lawn, Sidford. Age: 35. On 29/08/2023 at Exmouth drive when drug above limit. Plea: Guilty. Disqualified for 12 months. Fine £120.

Joshua Hollingshead, London Road, Stroud. Age: 33. On 16/09/2023 at Ladram Bay, Three Rocks Inn, assaulted a female by beating and used insulting words or behaviour. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 18 months. Building Better Relationships. Fine £461. Compensation £100.

Luke Lilley, Loverings Court, Barnstaple. Age: 35. On 09/12/2023 at Barnstaple drink driving, without a licence and insurance. Plea: Guilty. Disqualified for 14 months. Fine £120.

Melissa Thomas, Whipton Barton Road, Exeter. Age: 35. On 15/10/2022 at Drakes Road, Exeter, assaulted two police officers by beating. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 12 months. Unpaid work for 120 hours. Compensation £200.

MAY 14

Ben Ashley, High Street, Bideford. Age: 37. On 19/10/2023 at Southwark, London, used threatening or insulting words or behaviour to a female. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 12 months. Unpaid work for 80 hours. Compensation £150. Restraining order.

Richard Wallis, Victoria Road, Dartmouth. Age: 35. On 13/02/2024 at Exeter driving while disqualified. Plea: Guilty. Eight weeks in prison suspended for 18 months. Unpaid work for 150 hours. Disqualified for 14 months.

Karl Hernan, Lane to Palfreys Barton, Cove. Age: 60. On 26/04/2024 at Tiverton assaulted a police officer by beating and stole gammon steaks from Tesco. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 18 months. Fine £400. Compensation £20.

MAY 15

Shaun Roberts, NFA, Feltham. Age: 26. On 18/11/2022 at Exeter conveyed a mobile phone into HMP Exeter. Plea: Guilty. Six weeks in prison.

Daniel Smith, Gould Road, Exeter. Age: 29. On 12/04/2024 at Rydon Lane drink driving. Plea: Guilty. Disqualified for 18 months. Fine £120.
