A Spanish man faced the dilemma of a lifetime when he discovered €60,000 had mistakenly been deposited into his bank account.

He had to decided whether he should keep it and stay quiet, or point out the error and lose the £44,000 cash.

The 50-year-old, from near the northern city of Burgos, allegedly opted for the former.

He is then accused of transferring half of the windfall into his wife’s account, according to La Nueva España.

Bank officials reportedly discovered the mistake, and asked him to return the money.

But the man, identified only by his initials of CBE, had already withdrawn around €28,000 - and refused to hand it back.

He was arrested by the National Police and now faces charges of misappropriating funds.

Local media reports that the money had been destined for another of the bank’s clients, but had been erroneously placed into the wrong account.
