Update (August 6, 2020): Lionsgate has confirmed that a Dirty Dancing sequel is on the way.

Studio boss Jon Feltheimer told investors during an earnings call on Thursday (August 6) that star Jennifer Grey will produce and appear in a follow-up film, from 50/50 director Jonathan Levine (via TheWrap).

"It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise's fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company's history," he said.

Original: Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey is working on an untitled dance movie with studio Lionsgate, and speculation is now rife that said movie could potentially be a sequel to the 1987 classic.

As reported by Deadline, Grey will star in and executive produce the movie, which is set in the 1990s. However, the studio is refusing to offer comment on if it's actually linked to Dirty Dancing.

If it does turn out to be related, this wouldn't be the first time Hollywood has tried to do something with the property.

Back in 2004, there was a prequel (or 'reimagining') called Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, which was set against the backdrop of the Cuban revolution and starred Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's Diego Luna. It wasn't particularly well-received and only just broke even at the box office.

Then, several years later in 2017, there was a television remake that starred The X Factor judge and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger alongside Will and Grace's Debra Messing.

But while we'll have to wait and see what comes of this one, it was just last week it was announced that Grey was divorcing her husband of 19 years, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD star Clark Gregg.

She stated that they will remain close and that they will always be a family, along with the daughter they share.
