Disney has unveiled the first footage and some intriguing new storyline details about its live-action remake of Dumbo.

Director Tim Burton's updated version of Disney's classic animated adventure was one of the films highlighted during the House of Mouse's CinemaCon panel on Tuesday (April 24).

Those in attendance were shown production art of the young Dumbo, as well as a brief scene featuring human characters played by Burton regulars Eva Green, Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton.

The footage shown featured the trio of aforementioned stars under the Big Top in an eerie circus that brought to mind Burton classics like The Nightmare Before Christmas (via The Hollywood Reporter).

DeVito plays the circus owner Max Medici, and was shown in the CinemaCon footage berating his employees for mistreating his "amazing flying elephant".

Another intriguing bit of plot info was also revealed. The live-action Dumbo will actually open the same way that the animated original closed: with the lovable elephant taking flight for the first time.

"The original ends with the elephant flying," DeVito told the convention attendees. "This one begins with that and goes even further."

Earlier in the session, Disney's executive vice president Cathleen Tiff touched on Tim Burton's vision for updating one of the most beloved animated movies of all time.

"We've expanded the story, taking that as a jumping-off point for Dumbo's newest story," Tiff promised.

Dumbo - which will also star Colin Farrell, Alan Arkin and Joseph Gatt - will open on Friday, March 29, 2019 in US and UK cinemas.
