Dixons Carphone dials up £440m half-year loss

Electricals to mobile phones giant Dixons Carphone (Frankfurt: CWB.F - news) has reported a half-year loss of £440m as it counted the cost of a tough mobile phone market and warned of uncertainty ahead.

The high street giant behind Currys PC World and Carphone Warehouse also launched a shake-up designed to revive the business including measures to bulk up its online presence and improve the customer experience.

It said that while it was the number one player in its main business of selling mobile phones - which has been hit by reduced demand for new handsets - but that the operation was loss making and was losing market share.

Chief (Taiwan OTC: 3345.TWO - news) executive Alex Baldock said the company's turnaround plan put it "on the path to sustainable success".

But he added: "There are headwinds and uncertainty facing any business serving the UK consumer, we've had our own challenges, and our plan will take time."
