Doctor Who star Annabel Scholey will team up with Merlin's Colin Morgan for a new BBC thriller, created by Doc Martin writer Colin Bateman.

The BBC unveiled the cast of new psychological thriller Dead and Buried, additionally confirming that filming is currently underway on location in Northern Ireland.

The four-part series is based on Bateman's one-woman play Bag For Life which tells the story of young mum Cathy (Scholey) who bumps into Michael (played by Morgan) - the man convicted of her brother's brutal murder twenty years ago.

Unable to shake off the chance encounter, Cathy hunts down details of Michael's new life post-prison and struggles to accept his newfound success after cruelly snatching away her own brother's life.

"Re-traumatised by her past, Cathy instigates a clandestine relationship with the man she despises, embarking on a campaign of harassment and deceit," the synopsis reads. "As Cathy’s obsession grows, dark fantasies of revenge and reality blur as she sets out on a campaign of psychological warfare to destroy Michael’s life."

Bateman, who also acts as Executive Producer on the thriller shared his delight for the upcoming project: "Very excited that Dead and Buried is coming to television. It has been a fascinating journey from the original short story, to the one-woman stage show, and now expanded into an exciting four part drama."

"Although it has changed greatly, the actual conundrum at the heart of the story is universal and timeless - what do you do if you meet someone who has prospered after murdering one of your loved ones? Do you say something? Do you do something? How would you react?"

Scholey describes Cathy as "a wonderfully complex character" that she's excited to bring to life. The Split actress also shared her delight at being reunited with director Laura Way, whose recent screen credits include Maxine, Blood, and Channel 5 drama The Holiday.

"Laura Way is a director I’ve worked with before and we have a wonderful shorthand, so it’s very exciting to be teaming up again for such a compelling story," she said.

Supporting cast includes Coronation Street star Kerri Quinn, Vikings actor Owen Roe, Carnival Row's Waj Ali and Niamh Walsh of The Sandman fame.

Dead and Buried will air on the BBC at a later date.
