Doctor Who fans are busily signing a petition to save the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff, with it approaching 10,000 names.

Although the attraction is set to close later this year when its five-year lease expires, a petition set up by Bex Ferriday, who lives in Splott, Cardiff, is gaining traction online.

Ferriday told Wales Online: "It's been an opportunity to make Cardiff a unique and special place, and so it does seem strange.

"I know the land was only leased for five years but surely anyone can see that to knock this on the head, when we have got Doctor Who being filmed here and the studios here, seems like a really stupid thing to do."

Featuring sets, props and memorabilia from the show, it was the first permanent exhibition of its kind - and over the years it has been regularly updated to reflect new storylines and, of course, Peter Capaldi's arrival as the Twelfth Doctor.

A BBC Worldwide spokesperson previously said that there are no plans to move the artefacts elsewhere, admitting: "As to opening somewhere else, we are not sure yet."

Ferriday added: "I set it up just expecting friends and family to sign it. I was pretty shocked and terrified by the popularity it garnered pretty quickly.

"I think the way it's been done suggests they know this was going to cause a great deal of upset. I think the deal has been done, but my message to people who have signed the petition is that we want to have something, a smaller version, somewhere in Cardiff."

Ferriday went on to explain that people with autism, anxiety and depression "cite the Doctor Who Experience as being one of the few places they can go and feel completely 'at home'", saying it's "their own, personal form of therapy".

The petition is being presented at the Doctor Who Experience on Saturday, March 4.
