Former Doctor Who star Alex Kingston has suggested that she would be interested in returning as River Song.

The character was last seen in 2015 episode 'The Husbands of River Song' during Peter Capaldi's tenure as the Doctor.

Speaking to Radio Times, Kingston shared that she spoke with current Doctor Jodie Whittaker about the possibility of coming back to the show.

"I did meet her. We chatted about me coming back to Doctor Who," she said. "I love the character, and I think that, my gosh, there are wonderful potential opportunities down the road.

"But it's not my decision."

Kingston added that she doesn't think the relationship between River Song and Whittaker's Doctor would be too different, compared to when she appeared alongside Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi.

"The fact is, because they're all the same person ultimately, I don't think she would think of her any differently to any of the others in a way.

“Because they're the same spirit inside. It's just a different, deep love."

Steven Moffat, showrunner during the majority of Kingston's time on the show, recently declared that he's "loving" the new era of Doctor Who and called for fans to back it as well.

Whittaker will be back for series 12, which has been scheduled for early 2020. Tosin Cole (Ryan), Mandip Gill (Yaz), and Bradley Walsh (Graham) are all back for more adventures as well.

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
