Contains spoilers for The Couple Next Door

Our latest drama obsession is Channel 4's newest thriller series The Couple Next Door, which tells the story of two couples living on the same street who become, "sexually entangled in a way that will change their lives forever".

The Couple Next Door stars Eleanor Tomlinson, Sam Heughan, Alfred Enoch and Jessica De Gouw and is based on a Dutch series of the same name. As the six episodes unfold things start to get seriously messy, with partner swaps, surprise pregnancies, a creepy stalker and a criminal sub-plot involving Danny (Sam Heughan).

The series ends with a tense chase through the woods and a major shoot-out. So what happens in the final episode to lead up to this shoot-out and who is responsible for the shooting? Here's the full ending of The Couple Next Door explained.

What happens in the final episode of The Couple Next Door?

The final episode of The Couple Next Door kicks off with Becka (Jessica De Gouw) confronting Danny at home about the child he fathered with Lena.

Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) heads home where she tells her parents Susan (Anastasia Hille) and Brian (Andrew Woodall) she's pregnant, but not who the father is (PSA it's Danny). They're super happy and allow her to use their spare cottage for a little break away.

Meanwhile things are not going well for Danny, with his literal partner in crime being interviewed by the police. Back at home Danny and Becka are discussing his other child and Danny reveals he didn't cheat on Becka and that his relationship with Lena began before they met.

Elsewhere Alan (Hugh Dennis) attempts to apologise to Jean (Kate Robbins), who does not take it well.

Danny is being called into work for questioning, but before he can get to that or apologise properly to Becka, he gets a call from Evie who says her dad has gone mad and trapped her in the cottage. Turns out he actually hasn't, and the pair had just had a difficult conversation when Evie revealed her baby's real father. However, Danny and Becka don't know this and so they rush over to the cottage.

Back at Evie and Pete's house, Pete runs into Jenny who has decided to leave Alan and also drops the bombshell about Evie and Danny seeing each other behind Pete's back. Pete figures out they must be together and grabs the gun (which belonged to the criminal in the confrontation from the night before with Danny) and heads off to find them.

Danny and Becka eventually make it to the cottage where they discover Evie in the bath. Turns out she just wanted to seduce Danny, and was in no real danger. Danny declares his love for Becka, not Evie and apologies for leading her on, which she doesn't exactly believe.

Pete then shows up having made a detour to Evie's parents' house and threatens Danny with the gun.

Then the guy from the criminal syndicate shows up, bearing a rifle and things look they are all about to kick off until Brian turns up and shoots him. Pete and Danny then begin wrestling over the gun.

Evie then runs away and the whole group chase after her. They come to a stop and Pete begs Evie to stay with him, professing his undying love for her. Danny charges at Pete to get the gun off him but Pete lets off a shot and a bullet ends up in Danny's leg.

Becka tends to Danny's leg, while Evie savagely tells Pete she doesn't love him anymore. Then, rather shockingly a gun shot goes off and Pete is left with a gun shot in his abdomen.

Who shot Pete in The Couple Next Door?

We then see Pete fall back startled looking at his stomach which is now bleeding. Pete was the last one we saw hold the gun when Evie initially approached him but when he pulls away from her after the gun shot, we see that in fact Evie is now holding the gun. So did she pull the trigger on purpose? Did Pete shoot himself? Or was it an accident as Evie was removing the gun from his hands?

Well it appears while we won't get a definitive answer as to who shot Pete, the police appear to think Evie is responsible for shooting Pete as she is seen being taken into a police car as the episode ends.

Thankfully Pete appears to have survived as he is taken on a stretcher in an ambulance, but it doesn't seem to matter to Evie, as she looks rather longingly at Danny as she heads into the police car.
