Dog Attack: Charges 'Unlikely' Over Death

Police investigating the death of a 14-year-old girl in a dog attack last month say a prosecution is "unlikely at this stage".

Jade Anderson's body was found with injuries consistent with a dog attack at a house in Atherton, near Wigan.

Officers who were called to the property were confronted by a number of "aggressive and out-of-control" dogs, four of which were put down and a fifth securely contained.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At this stage of the enquiry, we do not have anything evidentially to categorically prove a crime has been committed.

"Therefore it is unlikely at this stage we will be seeking to bring a prosecution.

"That is not to say that no prosecution will ever be brought and we still have a number of inquiries to make.

"While we do not want to be drawn on the politics surrounding the legislation of dangerous dogs, we are nonetheless bound by the law.

"As always, our thoughts are with Jade's family and we continue to offer them support at this difficult time."

Jade is thought to have returned to the house in Chaucer Grove with a meat pie and was alone with the dogs when she was attacked.

Police said there were no previous complaints about the animals, believed to include two bull mastiffs and two Staffordshire bull terriers.
