Usually they just eat the homework.

But one dog went a little further when he set fire to his owner’s kitchen while they were out on a school run.

The accident-prone pet managed to switch on two electric hobs after jumping up onto the cooker at the family home in Stoke-on-Trent.

After the pooch scrambled onto the cooker, he hob then ignited clothing placed on the cooker top, with flames spreading to nearby cupboards.

The dog was rescued unharmed.

John Kitchener, from the fire service, added: “Thankfully the dog was not injured during this fire but things could easily have been very different.”

He also had a word of caution for the semi-detached home owners.

“It is really important not to leave any flammable items on top of or near to cookers; even if you are positive they switched off,” said Kitchener.

“This incident also shows how important it is to have working smoke alarms installed in your home.

“If these alarms had not alerted the neighbour to the fire the outcome could have been far more serious.

“Fortunately our crews were alerted early enough to rescue the dog and prevent further damage to the home.”
