A dog walker was left gobsmacked after stumbling upon a mass of unusual creatures during a stroll on a beach.

Katie Tootell was out with her pets at Traeth Lligwy, Anglesey, last April when she encountered something she'd never laid eyes on before.

Her dogs were sniffing at a rubbery-looking creature she initially thought was a beached jellyfish tucked away beneath some seaweed.

But on closer examination, she realised it was something far more peculiar that had piqued her dogs' curiosity, reports North Wales Live.

It was in fact a cluster of rubbery, translucent, worm-like capsules, each about two inches long.

The mass was around 25cm long and each gelatinous pod contained hundreds of miniscule specks.

Katie said: "I came upon it while walking my dogs on Traeth Lligwy. The dogs spotted it first and when they started to sniff it I thought they'd just come across a jellyfish, but when I saw it up close, I didn't have a clue what it was."

She added: "I've been coming to the beach for 12 years and I've never seen anything like it before."

What appeared to be small white dots inside the jelly tentacles turned out to be squid eggs.

Squid eggs are typically fixed to the seabed and must have been dislodged to end up on the shore.

Although such occurrences are not common in the area, they do happen from time to time, and usually, it's bad news for the embryonic squids.
