We all know that having a motivational buddy to work out with can greatly increase our chances of exercising, but as new studies show, working out together can actually be hugely beneficial for your relationship, too.

As it turns out, those that exercise together, really do stay together. After 7,600 adults in the UK were recently surveyed by Decathlon, 43% revealed that they exercise or have exercised with their partner, with roughly half admitting it had a positive impact on their relationship and that they enjoyed the quality time spent together.

How could it improve your relationship?

Almost a quarter of the participants surveyed listed 'feeling more attracted to their partner' as one of the reasons it boosted their romance, as well as enjoying watching their other half working out. While 22% ventured that they exercise to stay in better shape as a couple and to reduce stress levels, which in turn improved their relationship.

According to Psychology Today, things like running at the same pace as your partner or lifting weights in sync together can help bond you together as a couple. The rhythm of repeated action and deep breathing simultaneously leads to 'nonverbal matching', which can help you feel 'emotionally attuned with one another'.

What's the best exercise to do together?

The top exercise British couples like to do together is swimming (37% of participants rated this as their top activity), working out in the gym (just over a quarter preferred this), and for 24% of those surveyed, going for runs together is the thing that helps them bond with their partner.

So next time you're considering a lazy Sunday in bed reading the papers, perhaps you should pull on your lycra and take a lap around the park together.
