Dolphins Swim Alongside Gray Whales and Humpbacks Off California Coast

Aerial footage captured Pacific white-sided dolphins swimming with gray and humpbacks whales off Monterey Bay, California, on January 19.

Nancy Black, a marine biologist who works for Monterey Bay Whale Watch/Gowhales.com, told Storyful a female gray whale recently gave birth to her calf. She and her team of conservationists encountered the pair surrounded by “hundreds” of dolphins off the California coast.

Black said gray whales are currently passing through the Monterey Bay area on their southbound journey from their feeding grounds in Alaska to their breeding grounds in Baja, California.

“I was very surprised to see the newborn calf as gray whale calves are normally born in the warm lagoons of Baja,” said Black.

The group of marine biologists also encountered more than 60 Humpback whales in the outer Monterey waters, according to Black. Credit: Monterey Bay Whale Watch/Gowhales.com via Storyful
