Donald Campbell's vintage Jaguar expected to be auctioned for over £150,000

Donald Campbell's classic Jaguar XK150, a regular runabout for the British speed record holder, will be auctioned at Sworders.

The sportscar, purchased by Campbell in 1958, is expected to fetch over £150,000 when it goes on sale on June 18 as part of a separate classic cars auction.

Known as the only individual to hold both land and water speed records, Campbell received his fixed-head coupe from the Jaguar factory in Coventry in June 1958.

Coated in his favoured 'Cotswold Blue' matching his 'Bluebird' livery, the car came embellished with several special factory features.

Although primarily used for daily commutes, rumours abound of Campbell substituting the engine, employing the 3.4-litre power unit for a speedboat.

A charming image from the past showcases the car by Coniston Water alongside Bluebird K7, the jet-powered hydroplane in which Campbell set seven world water speed records from 1955 to 1967.

The XK150 later passed onto fellow car enthusiast Michael Brooks, who upgraded it with a D-type cylinder head for racing.

However, little is known about the car's whereabouts from 1964 until 1997, after which it was found in a ruined state and restored by racing family Henry Burton and his son Peter. The interior work was finished in 2001 by G & G Sergent.

The current owner, a passionate Campbell aficionado, acquired the car in 2013 from Chelmsford dealership J D Classics.

The XK150 has been displayed at rallies and club events, earning a feature in Jaguar Enthusiast magazine after the 2017 Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb.

The auction is set to occur at Sworders Stanstead Mountfitchet auction room.
