Donald Trump has announced the winners of his self-promoted “Fake News” awards, with The New York Times topping the list.

Shortly after the US leader tweeted a link to the list, which was published on a website run by the Republican National Committee, the site crashed.

When the error was fixed, it was revealed the president had singled out the Times’ columnist Paul Krugman for claiming the US economy would “never recover” after Mr Trump’s victory.

Second on the list of the “Highly-Anticipated 2017 Fake News Awards” was ABC News reporter Brian Ross for an erroneous report on former National Security advisor Michael Flynn.

Mr Ross was suspended by the network, which branded the report a “serious error”.

Mr Trump also took aim at a corrected report in TIME Magazine which claimed that that the president had removed a bust of Martin Luther King Jr from the Oval Office.

A number of CNN reports were also mentioned in the president’s “Fake News Awards” list.

The president also highlighted the Washington Post’s coverage of a Trump rally in Florida. He said the newspaper “falsely” reported the event was empty.

He added: “Dishonest reporter showed picture of empty arena HOURS before crowd started pouring in.”

Mr Trump shared a link to the list with his 46.8 million Twitter followers, alongside the caption: “And the FAKE NEWS winners are...”

Despite what he called "dishonest media coverage", Mr Trump went on to say there were "many great reporters", insisting there was lots of good news for the American people.

Mr Trump initially pledged to publish the "most dishonest and corrupt media awards of the year" on January 8 but later pushed the date back to the 17th.

The president’s has in the past taken aim at The New York Times and CNN, outlets he often brands “fake news”.

But over news firms do earn his praise, with the programme “Fox and Friends” regularly getting positive mentions from Mr Trump on Twitter.
