Donald Trump's son Eric said his family had "made Turnberry great again" as he opened a second course at the famous golf resort.

His father bought Turnberry in South Ayrshire in 2014 but has stepped away from the family business empire since becoming US president.

Mr Trump Jr flew into Scotland to officially open the second revamped course at the site, which has been named after Robert the Bruce, who is said to have been born at Turnberry Castle.

He walked on to the new course with his wife Lara, who is seven months pregnant, led by pipers and a figure dressed as the 14th-century king.

Mr Trump said: "Last time we were here there was a fun slogan 'make Turnberry great again'.

"I think today we can finally say we made Turnberry great again and I'm incredibly proud of all we accomplished."

Mr Trump did not take any questions from the media but told Turnberry members and invited guests that the completed resort was his father's "dream".

Speaking to the Telegraph at the resort in April this year, he said nepotism was a "beautiful thing" after taking over his father's golf interests in Scotland, including the £200 million renovation at Trump Turnberry and its main Ailsa course, and the Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire.

Mr Trump, who runs the Trump Organisation with his elder brother Donald Jr,  also admitted in the interview that his sister Ivanka acted as a "sounding board" for his father and encouraged him to launch military action against Bashar al-Assad in Syria in response to a chemical weapons attack that killed at least 87 people, including more than 30 children.

Speaking on Wednesday, he said he recalled visiting Turnberry with his father three years ago and said they "spent each and every day building this thing and dreaming about this".

He added: "Turnberry was always his dream, it was his painting, it was what he always envisioned, a course that could hold the best tournaments anywhere in the world."

The King Robert the Bruce course was designed by golf architect Martin Ebert, who also redesigned the Ailsa course, and replaces the former Kintyre course.

The cost of a round starts at around £120.
