Donald Trump protest: 100 demonstrators dress as the Statue of Liberty for demonstration in London

One hundred protesters dressed as the Statue of Liberty as part of a mass protest against Donald Trump’s immigration policy during his first 100 days in office.

The Amnesty International activists gathered for a demonstration outside the US Embassy in London this morning, with signs reading “refugees welcome” and “no ban, no wall”.

The protest was organised to mark the US President's first 100 days in office, which the Republican politician will celebrate on Saturday.

During his tenure, he has already prompted international outrage for signing executive orders placing restrictions on immigrants from some Muslim-majority countries.

Mr Trump has claimed the executive orders would help protect the country from terrorists.

The US President has also pledged to follow through on his election promise of building a wall across the US border with Mexico.

One hundred demonstrators dressed with the iconic green dress, torch and crown, using the landmark’s symbolism as the gateway to America to chastise Mr Trump’s policies.

Kate Allen, Amnesty International UK director, said: “In the space of just 100 days, President Trump has done untold damage to the USA’s already less-than-perfect reputation for upholding human rights.

“If the Statue of Liberty stands for anything, it stands for a willingness to shelter people uprooted through war and intolerance.

“It’s a crying shame that President Trump’s administration cares so little for what the Statue of Liberty represents.”

One protester read extracts from The New Colossus, an American sonnet by Emma Lazarus that was written to raise money for the construction of the Statue of Liberty's pedestal.

The first 100 days of a presidency are traditional analysed by US political commentators to look at its symbolic significance.

Matching demonstrations were also held outside the US Consulate General in Northern Ireland and Scotland this morning.

The US Embassy has been contacted for comment.
