Donald Trump is 'unstable' says Ed Miliband

Since his resignation as Labour leader in the wake of a heavy defeat at the 2015 general election, Ed Miliband has been quietly rebuilding his personal brand.

‘Milifandom’ is again stirring. Articles have appeared deeming him “hot”. He has even won fans in the United States.

This revival of warm-feeling for Mr Miliband has rocketed over the last week largely due to his no-nonsense castigations of Donald Trump’s administration.

The latest stinging barb he has hurled in the direction of the US President comes in the form of a blisteringly blunt tweet.

It reads: “Every day that goes by, the guy looks more unstable”, and contains a link to a Washington Post article about Mr Trump’s reportedly calamitous call to Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Mr Miliband’s tweet follows a fortnight in which he has consistently upbraided Mr Trump’s domestic and foreign policy-making.

Ahead of Theresa May’s visit to the US, the former Labour leader called on the Prime Minister to challenge Mr Trump on climate change.

“Can I ask her to reassure us that she will say to the president that he must abide by and not withdraw from the Paris climate change treaty. And in case it is helpful, can she offer the services of UK scientists to convince the president that climate change is not a hoax invented by the Chinese?”

Following Ms May’s meeting with Mr Trump, and the subsequent announcement of the US ‘Muslim ban’, Mr Miliband took the opportunity to entertain the House of Commons at Mr Trump’s expense as international protests took place at the travel ban.

He said: “I was briefly outside and apologise for going outside because I was due to speak at the event. I never quite made it to speak, but indeed, there were tens of thousands of people I think, or thousands of people – one mustn’t get into crowd size estimates given recent experience.”

He added: “I don’t want to do a Trump,” before then saying “millions! There were millions of people outside.”
