What happened?

Donald Trump began his state visit to the UK by reopening his feud with London mayor Sadiq Khan, calling him a 'stone cold loser' in a furious Twitter tirade. He was responding to an article Mr Khan wrote at the weekend in which he compared the President to 'the fascists of the 20th century'.

How did this all start?

The war of words between Trump and Khan began in 2015 when Mr Khan, who was then campaigning to be mayor, called Mr Trump's proposed Muslim travel ban 'outrageous'. The following year the mayor called Trump's treatment of Muslims 'ignorant'. The row intensified when Trump waded into the conversation around the terror attacks in London, tweeting criticism of Khan. In June 2017 Khan said that Trump's visit to the UK should be cancelled as 'his policies go against everything we stand for'.

The feud escalated after Khan gave permission for a giant balloon shaped like Donald Trump as a baby to be flown over London by protesters. During the 2018 working visit, Mr Trump said of the mayor: "I think he has done a bad job on crime, if you look, all of the horrible things going on there, with all of the crime that is being brought in.”

The weekend Khan said of the President: “Donald Trump is just one of the most egregious examples of a growing global threat. The far right is on the rise around the world, threatening our hard-won rights and freedoms and the values that have defined our liberal, democratic societies for more than 70 years.”
