Popular Dothan breakfast spot near daycare approved for liquor license

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Dothan commissioners, in a 5-1 vote, approved a liquor license for Breakfast at Tammie’s, but it did not come without any questions as the restaurant is near a daycare.

According to a current City of Dothan ordinance, a restaurant can’t have a liquor license if it is within 100 feet of a school, church, or daycare. Breakfast at Tammie’s is within 100 feet of Joyful Kids Academy and Preschool.

Tammie Potter, the restaurant’s owner, wants to add mimosas and cocktails to the brunch menu.

In this case, Potter told the commission that the daycare and neighborhood did not have a problem with the restaurant’s plan of providing alcoholic drinks

“If there’s no opposition from the neighborhood and they are operating within the parameters of the law then it’s responsible for us to take it case by case at the circumstances and make judgments based upon that,” District 5 Commissioner, Gantt Pierce said.

The only commissioner to say no to the license was District 4 Commissioner John Ferguson, who made his decision based on the current ordinance that is in place.

“I understand that they polled the neighborhood and there wasn’t much opposition, but if we have standards in place, then we need to go by those standards,” Ferguson said.
