“Doubling Down with the Derricos”: Karen Cries About 'Pressure' She Put on Daughter Darian After NYU Rejection (Exclusive)

"I felt awesome about my audition, but this rejection letter, it just makes me feel like I'm not good enough," Darian says in PEOPLE's exclusive look at the new 'Doubling Down with the Derricos' episode

It’s not all smooth sailing for the Derricos’ oldest child Darian when it comes to the college admissions process.

In PEOPLE's exclusive sneak peek at this week’s Doubling Down with the Derricos episode, Darian learns that she didn’t didn’t get accepted to her dream school, New York University. While she appears disappointed, her parents Karen and Deon offer their support.

“I felt awesome about my audition, but this rejection letter, it just makes me feel like I'm not good enough,” the 18-year-old admits. “It makes me rethink all of my choices.”

However, her dad tells her is going to be “OK” and her mom is quick to remind her that her "talent don't stop” because of a single rejection letter.

“I am so proud of you for going on this journey,” Karen tells her daughter.

“You worked your butt off and I just love you for that. So you go upstairs and you go rest your little tired mind, giving this your all, that’s what counts,” she adds before the pair share a hug.

Karen and Deon then worry that the rejection letter will shatter their daughter’s self-confidence.

“I don't want her to look at it like rejection,” Karen says in a confessional. “I want her to look at it like a redirection. It's redirecting her to exactly where she's supposed to be.”

“I think my biggest concern is knowing how to get her to overcome this,” Deon adds. “You know, teenagers, they lack understanding that life will give you something that appears to be bad that'll wind up being for your better good.”

Karen knows it needs to be a team effort when it comes to building up her daughter’s self-confidence, adding, “I want to make sure she doesn't have a fear of not being good enough.”

She goes on to reflect on what she learned from “the ordeal,” saying, “I need to be communicating with [my] spouse and the family, our team, and not trying to spearhead it on my own to look at the support that I have and come and talk and say, ‘Hey, this is what I see.’”

“I was beating myself up because I was like, ‘Look, this girl is talented, and this, for you to let her be that vessel’… I just felt this pressure from me,” she continues as she breaks down in tears.

Deon then gives her a hug and tells his wife that acknowledging their daughter's actions “means everything.”

Deon’s mother, Marian "GG" Derrico, adds, “You can be comfortable with yourself still knowing as her mother, you had her back.”
