Doug Fielding, a veteran TV star who appeared in EastEnders and Z-Cars, has died aged 73.

The British actor racked up an extensive range of television credits over the past five decades.

Fielding's family announced his death in a statement, saying: "We all love and miss him. He was a well known actor and lovely man and will be sorely missed."

The actor's cause of death remains unknown at this time.

His first role arrived in 1968 with TV show Mystery and Imagination before he scored the role of Sergeant Alec Quilley in police drama Z-Cars. He appeared in the series from 1968 to 1978.

He went on to appear as DS Roy Quick in EastEnders – the BBC soap's first regular police officer – in 1985 and also had roles in Family Affairs, Doctors and children's TV show ChuckleVision.

Fielding briefly returned to EastEnders in 2000 playing the role of a private investigator named Will.

His agent, Emily McGuire, said: "It was a privilege to know him and represent him."
