Outgoing Scottish Tories leader Douglas Ross has underlined his commitment to become a champion for Fraserburgh Harbour by helping to secure additional funding for its £278 million masterplan on a tour of the port, if he wins on July 4th.

The Tory candidate for Aberdeenshire North and Moray East visited the harbour to hear more about the development, which could create 290 new jobs for Fraserburgh. These include roles in fishing, fish processing, offshore energy and the harbour itself.

Mr Ross met with harbour development manager Pamela Neri, harbour superintendent John Murison, harbour clerk Jill Smith and commissioner Peter Chapman.

He heard about the need for more funding streams to be made available as approximately £11.6 million is required over the next three to four years in addition to the £3 million already invested into the masterplan.

The proposals aim to deliver additional breakwaters and a new deepwater basin, plus more than 12 acres of multi-purpose quayside space.

There will also be an additional dry dock for vessels up to 328ft in length, as well as better access to the existing Balaclava and Faithlie quayside facilities.

Scottish Conservative candidate for Aberdeenshire North and Moray East, Douglas Ross, said: “It was an excellent and fascinating visit to Fraserburgh Harbour to hear about their exciting masterplan which will be transformational for the town.

“Fraserburgh Harbour needs a champion in parliament to push these proposals forward for new funding avenues and I am determined to be the person to do this if I am elected to serve Aberdeenshire North and Moray East.

“The visit highlighted the harbour’s desire to remain a major player in the fishing industry while allowing them to tap into new sectors.

“This masterplan will allow the harbour and Fraserburgh to thrive for many years to come and I will continue to support their ambitions.

“My commitment is to be a strong voice for the area and fight for the investment needed to allow these proposals to be implemented for the benefit of the community and wider North East.”
