Dozens killed in attack on Afghan bank

A car bomb in the southern Afghan province of Helmand has left dozens of people dead and several others wounded. The device went off outside a bank in Lashkar Gah where civilians and members of the security forces were waiting to collect their pay. Omar Zwak, spokesman for the provincial governor, said at least 20 people had been killed and more than 50 wounded. There’s been no claim of responsibility but insurgent groups, including the Taliban, have in the past targeted banks where police, soldiers and other government employees pick up their wages. It’s the latest in a series of attacks that highlights the steadily worsening security situation across Afghanistan, almost three years after international troops ended their main combat mission in 2014.
