Drexel basketball player Terrence Butler found dead in his apartment

Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Drexel men's basketball player Terrence Butler was pronounced dead after being found in his on-campus apartment, officials said Thursday.

His cause of death is not yet known.

Philadelphia Police Department spokesman Miguel Torres told UPI on Thursday that a medical unit pronounced Butler dead at 9:32 a.m. EDT Wednesday in his Philadelphia apartment.

The southwest detective division initially investigated the incident. Butler was then transported to the medical examiner's office, which will determine his cause of death.

"On behalf of the entire Drexel community, we extend our deepest sympathy to Terrence's family, friends and teammates," Drexel President John Fry said in a statement.

"In addition to being a student-athlete, Terrence was involved in numerous activities and organizations at Drexel and was a friend to many throughout the university community."

Butler, a 6-foot-7 junior forward from Upper Marlboro, Md., appeared in seven games last season for the Dragons.

He starred at Bishop McNamara High School, outside of Washington, D.C., before going to Drexel. He was a 2021 McDonald's All-American nominee during his final high school season.

Butler was a Coastal Athletic Association Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll selection in 2021-22 and 2022-23 at Drexel.

The Dragons went 17-15 last season.
