This man has been dubbed "the luckiest driver in the world" after walking away from a heart-stopping near miss which saw a wheel from a lorry crash through his windscreen

Pictures of the stricken white Peugeot - which has been written off - show the devastating impact of the road accident.

Amazingly, the stunned driver of the vehicle cheated death and walked away from the crash with just minor injuries.

But according to the male driver, his young son had earlier begged to join him on the doomed road trip.

Miraculously, his dad had been unable to take him and the crushed child seat fitted to the passenger side shows how the boy would most likely have died if he had been on-board.

According to Lancashire Police, the wheel flew off a HGV as it travelled southbound on the M6 near Leyland.

The tyre then bounced across multiple lanes of traffic and over the central reservation, before crashing into the Peugeot on the northbound carriageway.

A spokesman for Lancashire Road Police said: "The driver of this car is the luckiest person in the world right now.

“This Peugeot has been written off after being crushed by a 22.5-inch tyre which became detached from a lorry on the M6.

"This tyre detached from an HGV on the M6 at junction 28, crossed the central barrier and struck an oncoming vehicle.

"How they got it to the shoulder and got out is beyond us. Thankfully minor injuries."

Remarkably, the driver of the white Peugeot managed to guide the car safely to the hard shoulder of the M6 near Leyland.

The officer added: "The driver's young son wanted to come out with dad.

"Thankfully he was unable to take him, but it doesn't bear thinking about what would have happened had his son been in this car seat."

It is not yet known how the tyre came loose.
