Visitors to Whitby were caught up in traffic chaos after the iconic swing bridge was left "stuck" open.

The bridge was first reported to be stuck at around 9.30am on Saturday with witnesses confirming motorists were diverted via the A171. The bridge was inaccessible to pedestrians and cars with businesses taking to social media to warn customers.

Coastal & Country Coaches, home of The Whitby Town Tour Bus told visitors to expect a build up of traffic.

A spokesperson said: "The swing bridge is currently stuck in the open position, so inaccessible to pedestrians & vehicles. Please allow us extra time, as there will be a build up of traffic. Many thanks."

Witnesses said the structure was stuck for several hours and an engineer was called to the scene. Sanders Yard Bistro Whitby was impacted by the issue. A spokesperson said: "The swing bridge is currently stuck open, so inaccessible to all. Please allow extra time to get to us. Help is on its way!"

They later added: "Traffic is backed up as well". It is understood the issue was fixed at around 2.45pm and the bridge is now accessible to cars and pedestrians. The current structure was built in 1908 and links the upper and lower harbour areas and the east and west sides of the town. It is not yet known what caused the fault.
