Drone Footage Captures Nighttime Volcanic Eruption in Iceland

Drone footage captured a nighttime volcanic eruption on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula on Saturday, March 16.

Footage recorded by Hordur Kristleifsson shows the fiery landscape near Grindavík, where a previous eruption took place in February. “Those are the last clips I shot before returning home, shortly before rain and low visibility took over,” Kristleifsson told Storyful. “What started as a monstrous 3.5-kilometer-long fissure has now decreased to only a few active craters.”

According to the Icelandic Met Office, the eruption is ongoing but stable as of Monday, and the hazard level remains high due to sinkholes above fissures, fault movements, lava flows, and gas emissions. Credit: Hordur Kristleifsson/@h0rdur via Storyful
