It's been rumoured, discussed and even mooted for a while but now Denis Villenueve has been officially confirmed as the director of the Dune reboot.

Posting on Twitter, Brian Herbert, son of Frank Herbert who wrote the Dune novel, said: "It's official -- Legendary Pictures has signed the very talented Denis Villeneuve to direct the exciting new DUNE series film project."

Villeneuve has fast become one of the hottest directors in Hollywood after his drama Incendies was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar. He followed this with Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario and last year sci-fi Arrival, which got wide critical acclaim as well as eight Oscar nods.

And next up he's directing Blade Runner 2049.

While we are naturally sceptical about updates, reboots and remakes, Villeneuve's involvement makes this a whole lot more exciting as a prospect. Put bluntly - he hasn't messed up yet and he clearly knows his sci-fi so this could actually be something wonderful.

The original movie adaptation of Herbert's epic sci-fi was directed by David Lynch and was something of an ambitious failure, which was poorly reviewed, did badly at the box office and saw Lynch take his name off, though it's since become a bit of a cult favourite.

It's set in the near future on a distant planet and follows the rivalries between noble families battling for control over a planet which is the source of a valuable drug.

"Dune series film project"? Could that indicate studio Legendary is thinking of developing more than one movie? We wouldn't be in the least surprised.

Blade Runner 2049 opens in UK cinemas on October 6.
