The DVLA has recently reminded drivers to familiarise themselves with the new driving permit regulations that came into effect on April 1.

Drivers can now obtain International Driving Permits (IDPs) from participating PayPoint stores across the UK. The DVLA urged drivers to be aware of the changes in an X (Twitter) post, stating: "Travelling abroad this summer and planning to drive?

"Don't forget, how you get an international driving permit has changed! Since April 1, 2024, IDPs are exclusively available from participating PayPoint stores across the UK."

A spokesperson for Swansea Motor Group commented on the changes, and said: "The recent changes announced by the DVLA are more than procedural; they are about ensuring that drivers have easy access to the necessary permits for safe and legal driving abroad. While the move to PayPoint outlets for IDP distribution is a significant change, it is also a reminder of the importance of staying informed about driving regulations, both domestically and internationally. As drivers adapt to this new system, they should remain vigilant about the requirements and ensure they are fully compliant before travelling."

Motorists eyeing up foreign road trips this summer have been issued a reminder to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) if they need one, with about 140 countries worldwide noting that it's either recommended or outright obligatory. Favourite holiday destinations such as Australia, Canada, Mexico, and Turkey insist on IDPs, while it's not needed for close European locations like France and Spain.

A comprehensive rundown of places requiring IDPs can be found on the government's official website, reports the Mirror.

PayPoint shared some insight into the matter on its webpage declaring: "IDPs support a British or Northern Irish licence in countries where photographic proof of ID is needed, or where your licence alone may not be enough. There are three types of IDPs, and the right one for you depends on the country or countries you wish to drive in."
