The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has outlined seven changes that Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimants must inform them about to avoid sanctions.

The payment, which is not means-tested, provides additional living costs for those who struggle with daily tasks due to long-term physical or mental health conditions.

However, there are certain circumstances that must be reported to continue receiving payments. Failure to do so could result in sanctions or loss of the benefit altogether, according to the Mirror.

To maintain your PIP payments, these are the changes you need to report:

  • Your personal details change - for example your name, address or doctor

  • The help you need or your condition changes

  • Your condition has worsened and you are not expected to live more than 12 months

  • You go into hospital or a care home

  • You go abroad

  • You're imprisoned or held in detention

  • Your immigration status has changed, if you are not a British citizen

Citizen's Advice suggests that there may be other changes that could affect your PIP, and if you're uncertain, it's better to inform the DWP anyway.

These changes can be reported in several ways. You can call the DWP on the free PIP helpline at 0800 121 4433, available from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Alternatively, you can write to the DWP to report the change. The correct address will be on your PIP letters, but you can also call the PIP helpline to ask for the correct address to send your report to.
