Piers Morgan isn't exactly the most popular man in showbiz – but somebody loves him, because he's had praise heaped on him by Eamonn Holmes.

The occasional host of This Morning told OK! Online at This Morning Live in Birmingham that he credits Morgan with saving breakfast TV.

"Piers Morgan means that there is a breakfast genre to work in," he said. "He has saved it…not just for ITV, but for all the other channels as well.

"People have to understand what Piers Morgan brings to the table."

Holmes added that presenters need to be anything but boring – and Morgan certainly fits the bill there.

"You have to be very funny, very controversial, very interesting, very serious, whatever, but you can't be very boring," he said.

"If you're bland – which Piers is absolutely not – that's what makes people watch.

"So even if they're watching to slag him off, they're still watching. That is the brilliant thing."

He added that there's absolutely no rivalry between the presenters – quite the opposite in fact, as he's got nothing but praise for Morgan.

"Piers Morgan, I've told him to his face and he's thanked me for it, is the saviour of breakfast television," he said.

"Therefore, he means that there is breakfast television to work on and inherit if you want it."

Eamonn added that there's no way he'll be retiring any time soon, saying that he has a real affinity and "love" of what he does.

"This is what I wanted to do when I was a child, so why would you be fed up of it?" he said.

"I just have this love of broadcast. You always want to learn and to push the barriers – you always want to try and get it right and be better."

This Morning airs on ITV.
