The return of troubled Bobby Beale on EastEnders on Tuesday ultimately drew a wide range of emotions from the show's passionate viewership.

Bobby returned, albeit briefly, as part of Max Branning's (Jake Wood) evil revenge plot, which is now focused on running Jane Beale (Laurie Brett) out of Albert Square for good.

In Tuesday's episode, Max was forced to risk his entire plot by ordering Jane to leave Walford without her partner Ian (Adam Woodyatt), despite her previously convincing Ian to leave with her.

The last-minute switcheroo was the result of James Willmott-Brown (William Boyde) telling Max that Ian would be useful to them down the road, and thus needed to stay in Albert Square.

Jane originally refused Max's demand, but was bullied into complying when Max showed her a mobile phone photo of Bobby shot by his cellmate - an ominous sign that Max's devious plot could even reach into the boy's prison cell.

The brief appearance from Bobby evoked strong emotions from viewers, with some fans wrongly assuming that the character had been recast with an older actor (warning: NSFW reactions):
