Tonight's (August 21) episode of EastEnders was a two-hander between Phil Mitchell and Jay Brown, with Phil explaining that Jay's dad isn't actually Jase Dyer like everyone believed, but a homeless guy who died in a fire Phil started all the way back in a 1994 episode.

While viewers, similarly to Jay, pondered over this apparent retconning of events, the episode's final scene showed Phil telling a mystery person on the phone that everything he told Jay was in fact... a lie!

Naturally, this has led to viewers coming up with theories on who the person on the phone is, who Jay's dad really is, and what the meaning of life is (maybe not the last one).

A lot of fans believe Max is involved somehow, seeing as how everything seems to be leading back to him nowadays. But could his potential involvement be more personal?

Other viewers had... other theories:

Digital Spy recently caught up with Jamie Borthwick, who plays Jay, to get his opinion on why he thinks Phil is lying to him, and where the storyline could go from here.

EastEnders airs Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on BBC One.
