EastEnders star Maisie Smith discusses her struggle with body dysmorphia in emotional new song

From Digital Spy

EastEnders star Maisie Smith has spent much of the coronavirus lockdown so far taking out her boredom on old furniture or joking about how much she misses McDonald's.

More recently though, it seems that the actress, who plays Tiffany Butcher on the BBC One soap and recently celebrated the fact that she's been a part of the long-running series for 12 years, has used the time to open up about her past struggles with body dysmorphia through song.

Taking to her Instagram page on Sunday (April 5), Maisie shared the moving tune with her followers.

"When I was little I would look in the mirror, holding in my stomach, wishing that I was thinner," she sang to the camera, as she strummed on an acoustic guitar. "Guess I had a case of body dysmorphia – and I still haven't shaken it off since.

"Things were getting heavy, that's what the scales told me," Smith continued. "Only 13 years old, wiping the tears of my cheeks, it felt like no-one else around me really understood the feeling."

Alongside the video, she wrote in the caption: "If you're feeling particularly down at the moment – don't worry you're not alone. It’s a scary time rn and tbh my anxiety is hitting the roof.

"Been feeling a bit trapped in my thoughts so I wrote this yesterday to heal my mind. I am so thankful to be home and well 🙏🏼 I hope we all come out of this together; stronger."

Smith's EastEnders co-stars Tanya Franks and Milly Zero voiced their support in the comments section, as did Louisa Lytton, who wrote: "I could listen to you ALL day."

EastEnders now airs twice a week – Mondays at 8pm and Tuesdays at 7.30pm – on BBC One.
