Yahoo News EastEnders star speaks out on Bernadette baby loss plot
EastEnders star Clair Norris has spoken out about Bernadette Taylor's tragic baby loss storyline, admitting she was overwhelmed by the reaction.
The schoolgirl suffered a late miscarriage earlier this month, leaving her and the rest of her devastated family struggling to cope in the aftermath.
Speaking about the harrowing plot for the first time, Clair – who only joined the show a few months ago – told Inside Soap: "It was strange because this is my first big story, and in a way, it was the first time the audience had seen me really act.
"But the feedback has been lovely and I didn't expect to get so much support. With everything else going on that week, viewers could have easily been distracted and forgotten about it."
Clair added: "As an actor, I was excited to be thrown into a challenging plot. It's a sensitive topic and I didn't want to offend anyone who'd gone through it.
"I did my research, and spoke to a midwife who helped me make sure I was playing it truthfully. Lorraine [Stanley, who plays Karen] has been especially supportive as well."
Upcoming scenes will see a grief-stricken Bernadette make a move on her brother's best mate Shakil Kazemi – in a moment that is witnessed by Keegan himself.
Discussing the impending drama, Clair said: "She has been through a lot and is not really thinking straight.
"Being a mum was her purpose and she's struggling now it's been taken away from her. Shakil is just there, and without thinking, she just kisses him."
EastEnders continues on Thursday, September 21 at 7.30pm on BBC One.
