Edinburgh weather: Thunderstorms to hit city as flood alert remains in place

Heavy rain and thundery showers have been forecasted for Edinburgh as the flood alert remains in place.

Following a yellow weather warning, the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) issued a flood alert for Edinburgh and the Lothians for Sunday and Monday. However, with heavy downpours forecasted for Tuesday and thunderstorms expected in the week, the city remains at risk of flooding.

According to the Met Office, the heavens will open from 12pm with heavy rain expected to continue through the day and easing by 7pm.

For Wednesday, May 29, BBC Weather warns that thundery showers will hit the capital from 6pm after raining for the majority of the day. On Thursday, the showers continue into the early hours and throughout the whole day with thunderstorms set for 3pm.

The Met Office's outlook for Wednesday to Friday states: "Cloud breaking up then some sunny intervals, becoming warm. Scattered heavy, possibly thundery, showers then breaking out in the east and lasting into the evening. Maximum temperature 19C.

"Further heavy showers on Thursday but drier with some sunshine on Friday and on Saturday."

SEPA warns that the duration of the showers could lead to flooding and fast-flowing floodwater which could impact buildings.

It warns: "Given the forecast intensity and duration of the showers, more widespread impacts could occur with potential for deep fast flowing water and damage to infrastructure. There is an additional risk of river flooding, mainly from small watercourses."
