EDL Leader Tommy Robinson Charged Over March

English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson has been charged over a march that was banned from passing through one of Britain's biggest Muslim communities.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is charged with not adhering to the conditions of the march and inciting others to do the same.

He has been bailed and will appear in a magistrates court on October 22.

The far-right organisation had wanted to hold the rally in an area in Tower Hamlets, east London, which it says is "subject to Sharia law".

The Met Police allowed the protest to go ahead on Saturday, but under strict conditions which meant any march would be held at the outskirts of the borough and close to Tower Bridge.

Up to 500 EDL supporters walked from Queen Elizabeth Street to Aldgate on Saturday, including Robinson.

A total of 300 people were arrested - 286 of them from a counter-demonstration against the EDL, for breaching the conditions imposed on them.

The other 14 were held for public order offences including violent disorder and criminal damage.

Along with Mr Robinson, two others were charged.

A 15-year-old boy accused of a public order offence will appear in Camberwell Magistrates' Court on September 19, while a 22-year-old man who has been charged with assaulting a police officer and failing to answer bail will appear at West London Magistrates' Court on Monday.
