Note: This article contains spoilers for the season seven premiere of Elementary.

Yesterday's (May 23) dramatic season seven opener of Elementary ended on the shock shooting of Captain Gregson. With his life hanging in the balance, a new case was opened.

It's going to take a long time for it to shut, too.

Chatting to TVLine about the premiere's cliffhanger, series boss Rob Doherty has revealed that Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Joan Watson's (Lucy Liu) latest investigation won't be an easy one to solve.

"The attempted murder of Gregson is not an episodic story," he revealed. "It won't wrap up very quickly."

Promising "a complicated case" with plenty of twists and turns that not even Sherlock and Joan will see coming, Doherty added: "It's something that we will mark over the course of the season, and in many respects, it will drive the season."

The attempted murder of Aidan Quinn's Gregson won't remain unsolved, Doherty has promised fans – although he did warn that the department's top detectives will "put themselves at great risk" to crack it.

"[It will] resolve itself one way or another, and they need to keep their heads down and do the only thing they can to help him, which is try and find out who tried to kill him and why," he continued.

"It won't be neat work. They're going to have to exhaust a lot of resources to find the culprit and put themselves at great risk."

Not so elementary after all, then.

Elementary's final season will run for 13 episodes before wrapping up with a time-jump in the drama's last ever episode.

"Something that I knew I wanted to do was move forward in time a bit with the characters by the very end," Doherty recently said, teasing the series finale.

"There was a period when Sherlock and Watson were not together; they went down very different paths, and their lives were very different from having been apart. We felt that would be appropriate for our show."

Elementary airs on CBS in the US. Sky Living airs the show in the UK.
