Elizabeth Debicki 'Avoids' Horror Despite Starring in “MaXXXine”: 'My Job Injects Enough Adrenaline' (Exclusive)

Elizabeth Debicki is happy to act in a horror movie — but you probably won't catch her watching one.

The star, who joins Mia Goth in her latest slasher MaXXXine, tells PEOPLE that her time as a horror fan ended as a teenager when a friend's father played a prank after watching a scary movie together.

"Like every teenager I went to sleepovers and birthday parties and got scared with people," she says. "I think my horror-watching days ended one day when I was watching — I can't remember [which movie] — with my best friend. We were like 16 and her dad, classic, went around the house and knocked on the window and scared the s--- out of us."

"I was like, I never need to be that scared again. I'm a low-risk individual in life," Debicki adds. "I don't like rollercoasters, I don't like horror films. My job injects enough adrenaline into me on a daily basis, and so I generally avoid them."

While Debicki is not strictly a fan of the genre MaXXXine dwells in, she knows horror movies can bring about "remarkable acting performances," citing Essie Davis' performance in 2014's The Babadook as an example.

"But I don't seek them out," Debicki adds of horror movies. "And if someone's like, 'Let's watch this,' I'm like, 'Absolutely not.' I watched Hereditary and I was like, 'Well, I'll never recover from that.' "

MaXXXine hits theaters two years after actress Goth, 30, first teamed up with director Ti West to produce a pair of connected slasher movies, X and Pearl. Those movies take place in the 1970s and the 1910s and are both set on the same Texas farmstead — MaXXXine catches Goth's titular character living in Hollywood in 1985, where she auditions for a horror movie and catches the eye of its director Elizabeth, played by Debicki.

"I've been a big fan of hers for a long time. She's an amazing actress and a very unique screen presence," Debicki says of Goth, calling her a "powerhouse" performer on the screen.

"It's really beautiful to work with her on this because she is the thing we all orbit around, and that's a really difficult thing to do as an actor.

"She's kind of holding three films in her at once, and that really vibrates off her on set," Debicki adds. "She has a lot of calm. She's very sure about what she's doing."

MaXXXine's cast also includes Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, Kevin Bacon and Halsey. The movie is in theaters July 5.
