Although Elsbeth just concluded its first season, star Carrie Preston already has ideas for future installments.

In an interview with TV Insider after the Elsbeth season 1 finale aired on May 23, Preston, 56, revealed her dream guest stars for the police procedural — and one happened to be her husband of 25 years, Michael Emerson.

“We’re hoping that he’ll come to the Elsbeth world now that he’s done with [Robert and Michelle] King’s other show Evil,” the True Blood star said. “That would be wonderful.”

As for the role Preston wants for the Saw actor, she has a few ideas: “It would be fun to see Michael not be a murderer or someone evil. It would be fun to see him maybe even be a part of the police department.”

Although the casting decisions are out of her hands, Preston said, “I’ll take him in any role that I can get him in.”

Preston expressed a similar sentiment earlier this month at the CBS fall schedule celebration, telling PEOPLE: "Because I have to go back to New York and be in the same house with him, I'm going to say my husband Michael Emerson."

"Not only because he's my husband," she continued, adding, "but because he's a brilliant actor."

The duo, who tied the knot in 1998, aren’t strangers to acting opposite each other, portraying on-screen lovers in the sci-fi drama Person of Interest between 2011 and 2016. On the couple’s 25th anniversary in September 2023, Preston shared a throwback photo on Facebook of the pair during their wedding.

“25 years ago today, these two babies got married! Still smiling over here, y’all…,” she captioned the image.

Speaking with PEOPLE in March, Preston shared the secret of her and Emerson’s enduring marriage. Because the two have to be apart often for work, they “really appreciate the time” they manage to carve out for each other. She also admitted that the distance “keeps things fresh” in their relationship.

"I do think there is something to the old adage, 'Absence makes the heart grow fonder.' I really do think that is true,” she said.

When they do have the opportunity to reunite, Emerson surprises The Good Wife actress with his romantic gestures. She recalled the Lost actor gifting her a bouquet of her favorite flowers in celebration of how “hard” she had worked on Elsbeth. One morning, he prepared a homemade breakfast for his wife on her day off work.

“That kind of thing is the kind of things that we like to do to surprise each other. It's the small gestures," Preston told PEOPLE. "We both have our romantic sides for sure."
